As the conference in New York, taking place in April 2017, will be the first Model United Nations experience for most of us, there is a lot to learn before we are able to participate as delegates. During the semester in fall 2016, we had regular meetings every second week. During these, we learn more about the United Nations and the rules of procedure that are to be followed at the conference. Also, we are introduced to finding official documents within the various databases provided. In addition to that, we work on our negotiation and presentation skills. As to improve our writing, we will each compose a short essay that style wise follows the leader texts in The Economist. For further information on those papers, please visit the separate section on this website.
Preparatory Conference – 10/22/17
On October 22nd 2017 we organized a mock conference in cooperation with the St. Gallen Model United Nations Club (SGMUN) with the topic “Managing regional stability in the South China Sea”. It was a very good preparation for a lot of the delegates to familiarize them with the general procedure of a debate.
Visit to Bern – 11/25/17
On November 25th 2017 we visited Bern in order to gain further insight into the international sector.
We met with Roberto Balzaretti, director of the Directorate of International Law at the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs. He gave us an insight into the role of Switzerland in the international context.
After that we visited the current Italian embassador Marco Del Panta at his house and had an interesting introduction to our delegates’ country Italy. We touched upon many different topics such as differences between Northern and Southern Italy as well as the Mafia.
All in all a very successful day – we received a lot of hands-on information and bonded as a group.
